The Mayfly AdultAfter drying their wings the mayflies fly to a nearby shrub, tree or bush. Not being very good fliers, their two or three tails, are thought to aid in stabilizing them, though to our eyes they appear like a lot for them to maneuver and carry. Here the duns molt into a second adult phase called spinners. Their second pair of wings now fully developed, they are also sexually mature. After a few hours or up to a day, they usually , though not always, return to over the water, where they mate. The males will swarm, and the females fly into the swarm and choose their mate. After mating the females lay their eggs, and both male and female die. Trout also key on this stage as the ‘spent wing' spinners give the mayfly one last chance to ‘offer' itself to the awaiting trout. From our point of view it is hard to deny that the mayfly's life is nothing but a gift to the wild trout. And the recognition of this fact centuries ago was a gift of one careful observer to the generations of fly fisher's that have followed. | Do You Know Anything About Stream Trout?But, there are disadvantages to stocking lakes with stream trout as apposed to putting them into stream. First of all, and probably most importantly, stream trout can not spawn in lakes. This is due to the fact that they need running water and gravel beds to lay their eggs. Since this can't be provided for in a lake, it is up to hatcheries to keep lakes stocked with stream trout. Is it worth it then? It is because there is a large demand for stream trout in lakes. Since the demand is there, hatcheries will continue to stock these stream trout in lakes. The good news is that once they are placed in the lakes, stream trout grow to great sizes and survive well. So, this can be a great benefit to the anglers who want to catch their prized stream trout in a lake! | A Simple Way To Identify and Catch The Big One In River!The classic rise is when a series of concentric rings fan out on the surface as the trout confidently engulfs the fly as it drifts past. Trouts do not rise vertically in the water, instead they drift back on the current to intercept the fly. The trout will then return to its station in the stream, usually inbetween weed beds on a shallow gravel run, under a bridge, overhanging tree or in a hatch pool, to wait for the next free meal. Other rises includes: Nebbing rise occurs when the trout pushes its nose right out of the water as heavy hatches of flies hover over its head. |
