Cincinnati catfishing BaitSome of the baits I have used for used for CATFISHing here on the Ohio River are, chicken liver, minnows, shrimp, Spam, French Fries and more. Fresh chicken liver works better than frozen liver that has thawed out. It does get bites however, cats peck at it so by the time you pick up the rod they have cleaned the bait off the hook. My experience is the fish swallows the bait more often than getting hooked. The biggest drawback is keeping the bait on the hook when casting from the bank. Trying to get a long cast with chicken liver is very difficult. It seems like half the time the liver will just fly off the hook with any forceful cast. This is no problem if you are fishing from a boat, just flip it out and feed it line so the current can take it away from the boat for you. | How To Choose the Right Fly Line WeightBut with a longer leader, the more difficult it is to cast and there is a reduction in accuracy. Thus, a 9-foot leader is more accurate and easier to turn over than a 15-footer. Considering this, plus the fact that the splashdown of the line is what is frightening the trout, there is a simple solution. Use a fly line one size lighter than the rod manufacturer recommends. Jim Green, who has designed fly rods for years and is a superb angler, mentioned to me more than three decades ago that he almost always used a line one size lighter when fishing dry flies where the trout were spooky or the water was calm. I tried it and have routinely followed his advice. So, for example, if you are using a six weight rod, you can drop down to a five weight line with no problem. In fact, in very delicate fishing conditions, I often drop down two sizes in line weights. There is a reason. | Do You Know Anything About Stream Trout?But, there are disadvantages to stocking lakes with stream trout as apposed to putting them into stream. First of all, and probably most importantly, stream trout can not spawn in lakes. This is due to the fact that they need running water and gravel beds to lay their eggs. Since this can't be provided for in a lake, it is up to hatcheries to keep lakes stocked with stream trout. Is it worth it then? It is because there is a large demand for stream trout in lakes. Since the demand is there, hatcheries will continue to stock these stream trout in lakes. The good news is that once they are placed in the lakes, stream trout grow to great sizes and survive well. So, this can be a great benefit to the anglers who want to catch their prized stream trout in a lake! |
