About The Speckled Trout

For those who are interested in speckled trout, you will be happy to know that these fish are some great catches. One of the most interesting features of this fish is the actual speckled trout fishing you will get to do. And, when you do hook the speckled trout, you will be surprised with the trout's ability to thrash and fight you on the way out. For many, a speckled trout fishing trip may be something that you are interested in doing as well.

Speckled trout are also called by other names including the spotted sea trout, specks, yellow-mouths, and paper mouths. They are usually about 14-18 inches long and weigh between one and three pounds. The speckled trout can be found in shallow but muddy bottoms, mostly coastal areas as well. They can be found though out the entire gulf coast in the United States. They are silver with olive green on the back and many small black dots throughout the body. The lower jaw is larger then the upper.

Do Fish See in Color

Fish do indeed perceive color. Every fly fisher knows that or ought to know that. Like humans, the retina of a fish have rods and cones. Cones are used in the day and rods at night. Color vision evolved to help fish identify potential food. In the environment of the fish, the background will either be the bottom, the water itself, or if looking up for food it could be the sky. The bottom is normally tannish olive to green. When looking across the water, the background appears pale silver blue. But if the water is off color due to algae or high water one must take that into consideration as well. Skylight becomes more important at dusk and dawn when it contains more reds.

Thus for opportunistically feeding game fish, flies with bright or contrasting colors and/or a lot of flash will make them stand out against the above mentioned backgrounds. The Mickey Finn, tied with yellow and red, and a silver body is one of the most effective attractor patterns. As for dry fly attractors , the Royal Wulff is still hard to beat, with its red and peacock body and white wings. Black flies, because of their strong silhouette also are easy for fish to spot. Let's not forget patterns that contain strands of flashabou or other tinsel that reflect light when stripped or while drifting through the current are easy for fish to spot.

Trout Fishing

The Tricos are prevalent in a majority of great trout fly fishing streams from Pennsylvania to the west coast. They primarily hatch in the morning, and primarily in the summer. Although the streams of Arizona and New Mexico can have hatches in February. The Trico is tiny, this adds to the frustration of many fly fisher's, it can be as small as size 26 hook, although they primarily are in the 18-22 range. Besides their diminutive size, they can be recognized by their lack of hind wing.

On many rivers the Trico hatch is multigenerational lasting several months into late summer or early fall. So trout see a lot of them, and a few fish get caught, making them even more selective. By far the easiest Trico fishing is the actual spinner fall. After the laying of the eggs, the females die in swarms and fall into the river, and then the males closely follow. Hatching usually takes place early in the morning or late at night. With the spinner falls shortly after daybreak to mid-morning.
