Fly Line ColorThere are quite a few colors of fly lines available. Some floating fly lines are bright yellow, others are fluorescent green, and still others are a pumpkin orange. So, with all the fly line colors available, which one should you choose. For sinking lines, it is generally best to choose a line that is darker in color, such as brown. While this point is open to argument and debate, most anglers seem to conclude that when sub-surface fishing, fish may be less apt to see a darker color fly line than a bright one. | Trout Species – Rainbow Trout and Brown TroutRainbow Trout are easily distinguished by the red stripe that travels the length of the fish, from the gill plates to the tail. Rainbow Trout also have hundreds of black spots that cover the dorsal of the body (the dorsal part of the body of a trout refers to the “back side” of the fish). Brown Trout : Brown Trout are the "smartest" of the trout family, frequently frustrating beginners and professionals alike. The Brown Trout, which is similar to the Rainbow Trout, is also found extensively throughout the world. The Brown Trout was originally a European and Asian fish, but has made its way to North America, New Zealand and South America. In the United States, Brown Trout are found extensively in the Rocky Mountains and also in Midwestern and Eastern U.S. trout streams. | General overview about Trout SensesAdditionally, even if you are fly fishing primarily for hatchery born fish, it is still good to know how a trout uses their senses. Why? Quite simply, by knowing how a trout uses their senses, your approach and presentation will be better, leading to less spooked fish and thus better results in the stream. While hatchery born fish are rather stupid, they aren't so stupid as to sit right on top of an anglers foot, patiently waiting for that fake fly to float right by. It's also worth remembering that compared to other fish, trout tend to be smarter than most, especially the cunning Brown Trout. Because of this, when fly fishing for trout, don't go about it like you would go about bluegill fishing. If an angler goes about fishing for trout on the basis that they are stupid, the angler is likely to be disappointed. A trout that can survive the rigors of a trout stream, especially a Brown Trout, is a very cunning animal indeed. |
