Stream trout fishing can be one of these types of fishing trips. Stream trout are any of the trout fish that live in streams. This includes the Rainbow trout, the Brown trout, and the Brook trout. While each of these fish have their own unique characteristics, they are all categorized by where they like to live and are collectively called stream trout. Some of the best fishing adventures, are those that are stream trout fishing trips. Rainbow trout, Brown trout, and Brook trout are all good catches. Their weights range from a few pounds on up to a couple of dozen pounds. In many streams, these fish can be found together or alone. In fact, they are most popular in the United States and Canada in the most northern parts and west of the Rocky Mountains. These fish often have very colorful markings and silvery bottoms and sides. Some of the best stream fishing is done from kayaks and during fly fishing as well.

Selecting the Right Tackle One of the most important things to consider when fly fishing is choosing your tackle the right way. Many people overlook this important factor and start with the wrong assumptions. They first buy the rod, then the line to match the rod, then the reel and then they buy the flies they will need to fish. The fact is the flies are the most important in determining weather or not you will be catching any fish. The tackle selection process should go as follows: First you must select the correct flies that you will be using to catch the type of fish you will be attempting to catch. The type of fly that is abundant in that particular environment. We will get into the types of flies to use in the right environment later on in the book. For now, accept that the fly should be chosen first.

Selecting Flies for Pacific Steelhead I keep several fly boxes stocked just for steelhead, I always think I'll leave a few home, before I head out, but rarely do. How many flies you decide to carry is up to you, but there a few things to consider when selecting an assortment of flies. The most popular colors for Steelhead flies are as follows: black, orange, purple, red, and chartreuse. The key is to have a variety of colors in the fly box before heading out. Although the old adage “bright days, bright flies, dark days, dark flies,” is a decent starting place. One also remember the time of day one will be fishing. Summer steelheading is done mostly in the darker hours, and therefore dark flies are popular like the aforementioned Green Butt Skunk, and its variations. As fall begins and water becomes murky and bright marabou patterns are often the ticket. And in the winter I use lots of egg-sucking leeches, bunny leeches, and bright egg patterns like the Sucker Spawn. As water becomes more murky, the brighter the pattern one can get away with.
