Trout FishingThe Tricos are prevalent in a majority of great trout fly fishing streams from Pennsylvania to the west coast. They primarily hatch in the morning, and primarily in the summer. Although the streams of Arizona and New Mexico can have hatches in February. The Trico is tiny, this adds to the frustration of many fly fisher's, it can be as small as size 26 hook, although they primarily are in the 18-22 range. Besides their diminutive size, they can be recognized by their lack of hind wing. On many rivers the Trico hatch is multigenerational lasting several months into late summer or early fall. So trout see a lot of them, and a few fish get caught, making them even more selective. By far the easiest Trico fishing is the actual spinner fall. After the laying of the eggs, the females die in swarms and fall into the river, and then the males closely follow. Hatching usually takes place early in the morning or late at night. With the spinner falls shortly after daybreak to mid-morning. | Selecting Flies for Pacific SteelheadPopular flies for Steelhead vary greatly whether you are fishing in the Pacific region or in the Great Lakes. The fisheries have developed separately and so have the preferences anglers have for flies cast to their intended prey. We will primarily concentrate on Steelhead flies on the West Coast in this article and concentrate on flies of the Great Lakes region in a future article. There are some common patterns used in both regions as well, and we will point those out as we go along. Fly fishing for Steelhead can be traced back to the Eel River, in Northern California, during the late 1800's.. And many of the first Steelhead pattern's roots can be traced back to the same era as well. There were a few problems during this time, and none more crucial than lack of material with which to tie flies. Standard featherwing trout patterns became the foundation of many steelhead patterns. Other patterns were adopted from English trout patterns and Atlantic Salmon patterns. Many of today's most popular Steelhead patterns can be traced back to these beginnings. Green Butt Skunk, Skykomish Sunrise, Purple Peril, to name just a few all hail back to these early beginnings. | The Experience of Stream Trout FishingMany people enjoy a nice, long fishing trip. Others enjoy fishing trips that take them to new places and new types of fishing. Stream trout fishing can be one of these types of fishing trips. Stream trout are any of the trout fish that live in streams. This includes the Rainbow trout, the Brown trout, and the Brook trout. While each of these fish have their own unique characteristics, they are all categorized by where they like to live and are collectively called stream trout. Some of the best fishing adventures, are those that are stream trout fishing trips. Rainbow trout, Brown trout, and Brook trout are all good catches. Their weights range from a few pounds on up to a couple of dozen pounds. In many streams, these fish can be found together or alone. In fact, they are most popular in the United States and Canada in the most northern parts and west of the Rocky Mountains. These fish often have very colorful markings and silvery bottoms and sides. Some of the best stream fishing is done from kayaks and during fly fishing as well. |
