How To Choose the Right Fly Line WeightWritten on the rod blank or handle is a code number which indicates the line that the rod manufacturer suggests is best for most customers; i.e., 6 line. To most fly anglers, this means that they should use nothing but a 6 weight line with this rod. But to get the full potential from different fishing situations, you may want to consider using several line sizes on your rod — perhaps varying as much as two line sizes from the one suggested on the rod. Manufacturers know your rod may be used in a host of fishing situations, but they can't judge your casting style and fishing skills. So when they place a recommended line number on your rod, it is implied that it's for average fishing conditions. First, understand that you're not going to damage a fly rod using fly line a little lighter or heavier than is recommended. Certainly, at times, the rod will fish better if different line sizes are used. | Tips to Photographing Your Trophy FishWith catch and release fishing, the ultimate goal is to return the fish to the water quickly and gently. Touch the fish as little as possible and never touch the gills. Because you have so little time, be sure the person taking the picture is ready to go. That means the film is in the camera, the cap is off the lens and the photographer is holding the camera up to his or her eye ready to snap as you are landing that trophy! When you are in the boat, sometimes it can be tricky but try to keep the camera even with the horizon of the water. It can be distracting if the horizon is on an odd angle. Keep the picture as uncluttered as possible. The water, sky and distinct beauty of the tundra around Tukto Lodge are background enough! | Brook Trout and Brook trout FishingThese fish range in color, but mostly brook trout are dark green to a light brown with sliver sides and even pale spots as well. As with other types of fish, their color tends to get deeper and richer during spawning. The male can develop a hook like feature on the jaw during breeding season. As for brook trout fishing, the best locations to do so are in the maritime provinces of Canada. Brook trout like water that is clean, well oxygenated, and usually are found in streams and lakes. To get some brook trout fishing in, an individual has the best chance using live bait or by artificial fly. Also, spin casting has been found to be effective at catching brook trout. These fish seem to be a good size and beautiful creatures of the north. For those planning a brook trout fishing trip, brook trout spawn in late summer or early autumn. Their lifespan is about five years. |
