The Experience of Stream Trout FishingMany people enjoy a nice, long fishing trip. Others enjoy fishing trips that take them to new places and new types of fishing. Stream trout fishing can be one of these types of fishing trips. Stream trout are any of the trout fish that live in streams. This includes the Rainbow trout, the Brown trout, and the Brook trout. While each of these fish have their own unique characteristics, they are all categorized by where they like to live and are collectively called stream trout. Some of the best fishing adventures, are those that are stream trout fishing trips. Rainbow trout, Brown trout, and Brook trout are all good catches. Their weights range from a few pounds on up to a couple of dozen pounds. In many streams, these fish can be found together or alone. In fact, they are most popular in the United States and Canada in the most northern parts and west of the Rocky Mountains. These fish often have very colorful markings and silvery bottoms and sides. Some of the best stream fishing is done from kayaks and during fly fishing as well. | Erie Steelhead FliesSteelhead feed heavily on schools of shad, smelt and other fish in the summer months. And when they first enter the river they have fish on their brains. Streamer patterns are the thing to start off with, when steelhead are first stacking up to make their run. Primary patterns used are the Woolly Bugger, Mickey Finn, Muddler Minnows and other streamer patterns. Dead drifted or swung they are deadly in the early months. Steelhead consume lots of eggs in their lifetime. Especially in the winter, when suckers move up the rivers to spawn. The most popular egg pattern is the Sucker Spawn, with the Crystal Meth a close second. Egg patterns are generally bounced along the bottom. And are a good choice all winter long into March. | How To Choose the Right Fly Line WeightWritten on the rod blank or handle is a code number which indicates the line that the rod manufacturer suggests is best for most customers; i.e., 6 line. To most fly anglers, this means that they should use nothing but a 6 weight line with this rod. But to get the full potential from different fishing situations, you may want to consider using several line sizes on your rod — perhaps varying as much as two line sizes from the one suggested on the rod. Manufacturers know your rod may be used in a host of fishing situations, but they can't judge your casting style and fishing skills. So when they place a recommended line number on your rod, it is implied that it's for average fishing conditions. First, understand that you're not going to damage a fly rod using fly line a little lighter or heavier than is recommended. Certainly, at times, the rod will fish better if different line sizes are used. |
