How To Choose the Right Fly Line WeightWritten on the rod blank or handle is a code number which indicates the line that the rod manufacturer suggests is best for most customers; i.e., 6 line. To most fly anglers, this means that they should use nothing but a 6 weight line with this rod. But to get the full potential from different fishing situations, you may want to consider using several line sizes on your rod — perhaps varying as much as two line sizes from the one suggested on the rod. Manufacturers know your rod may be used in a host of fishing situations, but they can't judge your casting style and fishing skills. So when they place a recommended line number on your rod, it is implied that it's for average fishing conditions. First, understand that you're not going to damage a fly rod using fly line a little lighter or heavier than is recommended. Certainly, at times, the rod will fish better if different line sizes are used. | Trout FishingThe Tricos are prevalent in a majority of great trout fly fishing streams from Pennsylvania to the west coast. They primarily hatch in the morning, and primarily in the summer. Although the streams of Arizona and New Mexico can have hatches in February. The Trico is tiny, this adds to the frustration of many fly fisher's, it can be as small as size 26 hook, although they primarily are in the 18-22 range. Besides their diminutive size, they can be recognized by their lack of hind wing. On many rivers the Trico hatch is multigenerational lasting several months into late summer or early fall. So trout see a lot of them, and a few fish get caught, making them even more selective. By far the easiest Trico fishing is the actual spinner fall. After the laying of the eggs, the females die in swarms and fall into the river, and then the males closely follow. Hatching usually takes place early in the morning or late at night. With the spinner falls shortly after daybreak to mid-morning. | Fishing for Cutthroat TroutThe cutthroat trout can be found in pretty much any type of water. But, it is mostly found west of the Rocky Mountains. The Yellowstone cutthroat is found in western Alberta in the headwaters of rivers. The two types seem to be separated by an area that has predominantly rainbow trout in it. The cutthroat trout is an ocean migrating fish. They do spawn from February through May. When you find a cutthroat trout you will know it is a cutthroat by several characteristics. The head is blunt with a long jaw that extends past the fish's eye. |
