Three Main Trout SensesTrout have amazing powers of smell. For humans, trying to understand smell underwater is rather difficult since we can't do it. However, trout have no difficulty smelling underwater, so it is worth an anglers time to make sure that they aren't introducing foreign smells into a trout stream (which can warn a trout to a lurking danger such as a fisherman.) When fly fishing for trout, do your best to avoid any artificial smells that are completely foreign to a trout stream. Avoiding these smells, though, of often easier said than done, as the sources of these smells can come from many sources. Fly line cleaners, fly floatants, epoxies and glue can all contribute alien smells to a trout stream. Other things such as aftershave, deodorant and even the smell of your clothing can all tip off a trout that an angler is near. | Choosing a Fly ReelThe definition of a fly reel has changed a great deal in the last couple of decades. Once thought of as simply ” a place to hold your line” the fly reel has evolved into a highly specialized piece of gear. With phrases such as “startup inertia”, “large arbor”, and “heat dissipative disc drag”, the beginner can often be led to believe that they need to be an expert in Newtonian physics to make an informed purchase. I'll try to simplify things a bit. Fly reel does do more than just hold line. A poor quality fly reel is a wonderful way to lose large fish, especially when fishing on light leaders and tippets. Additionally, selecting the wrong fly reel for a particular fly rod can throw off the entire balance of the outfit. So, let's get started learning about the world of fly reels. | Fishing for Cutthroat TroutThe cutthroat trout can be found in pretty much any type of water. But, it is mostly found west of the Rocky Mountains. The Yellowstone cutthroat is found in western Alberta in the headwaters of rivers. The two types seem to be separated by an area that has predominantly rainbow trout in it. The cutthroat trout is an ocean migrating fish. They do spawn from February through May. When you find a cutthroat trout you will know it is a cutthroat by several characteristics. The head is blunt with a long jaw that extends past the fish's eye. |
